THE REASONS
After the Mendizábal disentailment of 1835, the incipient middle class took over means of production and public power.
They believed they were superior to the rest of Castilian people, so they were entitled to Castilian and Spanish domination since they considered the best qualified to manage public affairs.
They understood public matters and the relationship between Administration and citizens like an exclusive responsability from who holds the power.
They went on with a Subject Political Culture.
In the period of the Restoration of the Spanish Monarchy, which begins in the last quarter of the XIX century, local party bosses (despot) were the intermediary between Parliament and Castilian people, and they used to buy votes to the political party they belonged in exchange of public support.
Although Liberal states were installed in Europe along the XIX century, Spanish society only knew to behave according to traditional submissiveness attitudes; and, although a theoretic equality had been established, mental conceptions of Ancien Régime survived and provided with the submission to the authorities that used to be considered natural inside the community.
The presence of those despot local party bosses slowed down the existence of a real participatory political culture.
Those despot local party bosses became into the new feudal lords.
Workers must accept the reality trusting on goodness and charitable feelings of ruling classes who looked for submissiveness of social behaviours. The Catholic Church took part to make up that collective consciousness so that they introduced a hierarchical dimension of the Universe that consecrated obedience and resignation. Those ruling classes introduced an exaggerated and non critic patriotism that presented any protest against the establishment as a betrayal of one´s own country. They conceived the nation as a large family, and the Spanish monarchy and Catholicism, as key elements of the Spanish national essence. They connected the Catholic tradition with the most magnificent moments of the country; the "National-Catholicism" doctrine was born.
These despot local party bosses are still in Castilian and Spanish Democratic institutions since generations of their descendants have taken over public power maintaining same attitude toward Castilian people.
Castilian people maintains too the submissive attitude towards these authorities, whom they still consider "the traditional ruling class against whom fighting and winning is impossible" so, it seems that, althought a Transition to the Democracy happened in 1.978, real social and mental changes haven´t been made for a real Democracy.
So, under these circumstances, passivity in Castilian and Spanish people can be understood.
The Spanish Inquisition used torture to make Castilian and Spanish people fit in the of Catholic doctrine of the "pensée unique". So, this has been engraved into Castilian and Spanish minds to lead them, in a unconscious way, to try to fit in "the normality", so, the fact of being rejected by the group in Spain weighs much more than in other cultures and countries.
The result is the well known "Spanish shame" to not follow the inner callings and develop the own and innate talents and abilities, having as a consequence a poorer and less diversified society with less options to have a more dynamic space where exchange and synergies could be possible.
Midlle class is still trapped into imitating traditional ruling class style without being able to find for themselves their "real identity", their way of life, their own style to do business, to wear, and to create a real, creative and dynamic community.
When religious sculptures from Castilian artists have been brought to museums in London, British have been horrified about the sadism with which they were made just to make Castilian people scared.
THE "SANBENITO"
The Inquisition used to put the "sanbenito" to those who dared to disagree with the "pensée unique" and Catholic dogmas.
This "shame" to dare to disagree has led the Castilian collective unconsciousness in order to not dare neither to be the one that oneself really is. There is in Castilian and Spanish mind´s people a "painful historical remembrance" that do not allow them follow their own paths, and begin their own businesses which would let them develop their own talents.
The torture methods that Spanish Inquisition used still remain in Castilian and Spanish people´s minds and still influence on current behaviours.
When Castilian and Spanish people were tortured had to declare that "they belonged to the normality" and they were "normal", understanding by "normal" those who didn´t question the Castilian establishment.
