God, in the novel, has Its own meaning.
All along the book, God appears and disappears.
God appears when Victoria is integrated into a safe environment in which she is allowed connect with herself, to connect with the others, to feel a part of the Universe, to be useful to a community, and to feel that her life makes sense. New York, in the novel, is the scenario in which Victoria is able to develop her own talents.
So, one of the conclusions in the novel is that God shows up when human beings are closer to themselves, and Victoria is close to herself when she is able to develop her talents, in New York.
It is the feeling of fulfillment that Victoria, the main character, experiences after having performed the character of Blanche.
This is described in the 8 chapter (Third Part) after performing Blanche´s character at the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York. It is described as an spiritual experience based on the possibility of living life in the present moment.
It is the same feeling that Wayne Dyer describes about himself when he writes and the experience of others writers, musicians, composers. Dyers mentions the Persian poet Rumi: "Between two and three o´clock in the morning there is a breeze that has secrets to tell you, do not go back to sleep."
Dyer says he feels integrated into the Universe when writing comes to him and it seems that it is not himself who writes but Someone greater to him Who is whispering him all ideas.
So, it is in these moments when we are the closest to ourselves and so God. We feel that everything flows and we are totally integrated in the Universe breathing in it; God is with us when we are able to accomplish our dreams, build our lives in the way we are called to. God is with us when we follow our own paths no matter the opinion of the others so that we can accomplish our personal mission, serve others, be useful in our communities and make our own contribution in this world. We feel that our lives make sense and we are fulfilled and happy.
God disappears when Victoria is in a poor environtment like Castilian one, in which she cannot develop her talents. Her spirit, in some way, is dead.
In the moments of tribulation, the connection with her own self becomes only possible when she is alone, when she can see herself to accept and love herself.
In these moments, Victoria can transcend and find the company of a Superior Spirit which is God; the God of Green Valleys.
